Camshaft Selection for Enhanced Harley-Davidson M8 Performance

When it comes to selecting the right camshaft for your M8 engine, you're making a decision that can significantly impact the performance of your Harley-Davidson motorcycle. With years of experience in building and racing motorcycles, I've had the privilege of sharing this passion with many like-minded enthusiasts. Often, our gatherings culminate in friendly races at stoplights or high-speed roll-ons on the freeway. It's always a thrill to have the fastest bike in the group, and choosing the right camshaft is a critical part of achieving that goal.

In my experience, most high-performance builds involve setting the rev limiter at around 6500 rpm, with my personal preferences leaning towards 6800 rpm. When pushing a bike to its performance limits, it's common practice to shift gears just before hitting the rev limiter. As you make those gear changes, the engine never drops below 5000 rpm. Therefore, to create a truly fast Harley-Davidson motorcycle, it's imperative to focus your attention on the 5000-6500 rpm range, as the power it delivers in the 2000-4000 rpm range is largely inconsequential. This approach ensures a fast bike without sacrificing drivability.

However, there are riders who have no intention of pushing their engines beyond 5000 rpm. Their primary focus is on enjoying a strong pull when rolling on the throttle and the convenience of not having to downshift when passing a car. For these riders, attention should be directed to the 2500-5000 rpm range. This range will provide the desired pulling power, making for a more enjoyable ride.

At Ward Performance, we understand that every rider is unique, and we offer a range of camshaft choices tailored to different riding styles. Additionally, keep in mind that your exhaust system can also have a significant impact on the power characteristics of your Harley-Davidson M8 engine.
